Yoga + Pilates: A Complementary and Beautiful Relationship

Intro

I feel a deep love for both practices, because at different moments in my life I’ve needed one or the other… although yoga, in some way, has always been there. Because yoga is in everything.

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot on social media—a kind of “battle” where one practice is minimized over the other. But the truth is, both have incredible benefits. And let me tell you something important right away: you don’t have to choose just one.

Do you eat the same vegetable every single day? Probably not—because you would be poorly nourished. The same applies to movement and wellbeing.

My Personal Experience

My yoga practice goes far beyond the physical. It’s a space to nourish my soul and my being. Staying present and breathing consciously… that is yoga.

  • Breathwork is yoga.
  • Your daily actions done with full presence are also yoga.
  • Yoga is the practice of connecting with yourself at any moment, from a place of love and unity.

On the other hand, I practice Pilates with a more athletic purpose: to build strength, improve my body, and support injury rehabilitation.

And one thing is clear to me: I will not stop going to yoga because I started Pilates. There’s no way to compare these two practices or replace one with the other. There is so much richness in both.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice that unites body, mind, and breath. Beyond physical movement, it seeks to create presence, inner balance, and conscious connection.

In a yoga class, we work on:

  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Breath
  • Relaxation

But we also learn something even more valuable: how to listen to the body and calm the mind.

What is Pilates?

Pilates, on the other hand, has a more physical and technical focus. It was developed to strengthen the core, improve posture, and stabilize the body.

Its movements are typically:

  • Controlled
  • Repetitive
  • Precise

With a strong emphasis on alignment and deep muscular strengthening.

So… Which One Should You Choose?

If you want to:

  • Reduce stress
  • Connect with yourself
  • Improve flexibility
  • Create overall wellbeing

Yoga may be your path.

If you prefer to:

  • Strengthen your core and back
  • Improve posture
  • Work on physical rehabilitation
  • Follow more structured exercises

Pilates can be a great addition to your life.

You Don’t Have to Choose

As I said before, you don’t have to choose between one or the other.

You can do Pilates and then complement it with yoga.
You can practice breathing exercises (which is also yoga) while strengthening your body through Pilates.
You can live a life rooted in yoga, even while practicing other disciplines.

Because yoga goes far beyond one hour of Hatha Yoga in a studio.

It is a way of living.

And I invite you to discover it.

Let your healing journey begins!
